If you could see the memories of every person you met would it be a blessing or a curse?

John Calabrace's life has been in havoc since he was a very small child. He spends his life fighting through a flood of memories, most of which are not his own. The second he is touched by another person, he knows every memory & feeling they have ever experienced, and those memories stay permanently etched in his head.

What might seem to be a wonderful gift to some, also has its dark sides. John flees college, finding solace in the Navy serving on a Navy ship and then aboard a nuclear submarine. That relative peace and isolation of submarine life is quickly taken away after being extracted and recruited into a world of espionage to unlock other secrets from around the world.

Is he an angel, is he a monster? Even the military men/ government handlers can't decide. While John may know everyone else's secrets, he also has secrets of his own. Those he feels, he can reveal to no one..

The Reflection Of Innocence edition by John Tolliver Literature Fiction eBooks

The complexity of this novel would be perfect for a movie. John Calabrace started out in a loving family with three brothers. He was different than the other boys, but it wasn’t as obvious until he hit junior high. He started seeing visions of events, but it wasn’t until later he realized he was seeing into the past of the person he was touching.
John’s visions were confused as seizures on numerous accounts. And he struggled with telling his family the truth because they thought he was just lying. So John tried covering up this ability by mimicking those around him. He became the life of the party since he could relate to everyone through their memories.
All this led to his desire to help his country, but he soon found he was either miss understood, feared, or considered a threat and should be neutralized. Very satisfied with the end, although I was sure his great uncle would have been involved.

The Reflection Of Innocence edition by John Tolliver Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Amazing, I can’t find any other word to describe this book, plainly amazing.
During his whole life, John has been struggling with this power he possess, as soon as someone touch him he ‘absorbs’ the memories of that person, as a child he tries to explain it to his parents, but even them couldn’t help him, so he isolated himself from the world, only wanting peace he joins the navy, but even there powerful people discovers his secret and is forced to work as a spy to uncover secrets from his enemies, everything becomes more dangerous and not even he can figure out whether he is a friend or a threat?
A truly unique read, how the author combines supernatural elements with military/espionage action is incredible, the pace is amazing, there was not even one time I could stop reading, it is so amazing, you should read it now.
I thoroughly love the concept of this novel, along with the way that it is written. I was especially impressed with the overall writing because this is the author’s first book. I wouldn’t have known that from reading it and for a new author, John Tolliver did an extremely good job. Within the story, the main character John has the unusual blessing (or curse?) of knowing people’s memory from a simple touch. It’s easy to see how many advantages such an ability could offer, along with the burdens that would go with it.

As some others have noted, the book does feel a little long-winded in places, especially as the author offers more background than you would expect. However, I didn’t have any problem with this aspect of how it was written. To me, the balance felt about right and I think the approaches to writing perfectly suited the subject matter.
John Calabrace is a man with a gift. He has spent his entire life fighting through a flood of memories, most of which are not his own. The moment he touches someone he knows every memory and feeling they have ever experienced. These memories remain with John permanently after the contact.

This gift, or curse if you will, leads John to relative isolation serving on a Navy ship where he tries to escape his gift. He ends up recruited by the government for a spy program instead. He is forced out of the peace and seclusion of his earlier life and forced to deal with people and the repurcussions of his emotional gift.

The book is emotional, compelling, and in certain places a page turner. It is written from the point of view of a man who suffers from a paranormal gift and is told in such a way that it is totally believable. I enjoyed this book so much that I will definitely be rereading it and enjoying the adventure again.
Reflections of Innocence was a tantalizing read. The main character, John Calabrace comes from a Norman Rockwell existence. His family is loving, and his grandmother is wise and doting. John also has a gift. It did take me a while to figure out what was happening to John (and I did like that bit of teasing), but once I did, things got really interesting. Mr. Tolliver is a very talented writer. My only real issue with his wonderful prose is that it was too much. John Calabrace would go off on some bit of introspection and stay there, sometimes in the middle of some well constructed drama. Whenever that happened, the-what-happens-next angst would lose steam. Despite this observation, I thought the book was very entertaining.
I enjoyed this book and am glad that I read it, but it is not one of those that I'll put in my book collection to read again some day. I went through a lot of emotions while I was turning the pages, sometimes becoming frustrated or even angry, but each time I began to question whether the author was wasting my time or not everything would come together and the point of the depressing journey would become crystal clear. There were also times when I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, heart pounding, in order to find out what was going to happen next. The story was a good one and the genius of the author is evident, so I do recommend the book to those who enjoy exploring the minds and thoughts of others or who dream of the "What-if's" involved if the full power and potential of the human mind were realized in a single individual. The details of the psychological toll that often seems to occur in the life of a person with a gift so rare that it sets them apart from all other humans is the strength of this book, and it is written as if coming from someone with first hand experience.
The complexity of this novel would be perfect for a movie. John Calabrace started out in a loving family with three brothers. He was different than the other boys, but it wasn’t as obvious until he hit junior high.
